Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF DX AF-S Nikkor
7 out of 10 points and recommendedVery sharp, 2.8 allows for great AF in low light, solid build, the chicks dig itQuite soft around the edges at 17mmMy main complaint about this lens is that it is soft around the edges when shooting at 17-20mm. It doesn't matter if you stop down to f/8 - the problem still persists. Its does just about everything else very very well - but this is a major weakness. The 18-70mm Nikkor is significantly sharper on the edges at 18mm. I have used two copies, both brand new and had the same problem.

Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED-IF DX AF-S Nikkor
8 out of 10 points and recommendedPrice, sharpness, great rangeTends to back focus slightly - even with good AF targetsThis lens is really great for the price. It only has two serious weaknesses. First, its not a 2.8 so its not great in low light (AF is a bit problematic) and second it back focuses a bit when you are in the mid range of the zoom.
